REGARDING THIS FRIDAY
As stated during my show last week, I will not be broadcasting Friday, September 25. I'll try to make an aircheck of the show and will possibly upload it to my Live365 station.
Tune in at 8 PM Eastern to WHCL FM (with direct streaming here) for Pete's program.

"Rare Bits" June 12, 2009

This RADIOLA! goes back to shellac--and what shellac! Here are 30 rare and strange delights from recent record auctions, eBay coups, and serendipitous stumblings. Most of this stuff has never been on CD--and never will be on CD. Nonetheless, it has the fresh tanginess of music you've probably never heard before.
Tune in Friday at 8 PM Eastern to WHCL (with direct streaming here). This program will be uploaded to my Live365 station shortly.
UPDATE: Thanks to Jane and Jacques for separately revealing the significance of the title of the first selection, "Dream of the Rarebit Fiend." It turns out to have been an early comic strip by the brilliant Winsor McCay, with further details here and an archive of strips linked below. "Radiola Calling!" June 5, 2009
RADIOLA! begins its fifth year on WHCL-FM, and this RADIOLA! is just like all the other ones, only different.
Many thanks again to George in Oregon, Mark Fuller, Ray Mitchell of the UK, Toast of New York, Randy, Rich, and The Codger.
And an especially heartfelt thanks to Jonathan Mead for letting me have my own show in June 2005. For all he knew I was some crazy person wishing to commandeer the airwaves to play totally incongruous music punctuated with inappropriate commentary. (And he let me keep doing the show when that proved to be precisely the case.)
Tune in to WHCL-FM this Friday at 8 PM Eastern (with direct streaming here). The show will be uploaded to my Live365 station presently.

"Where's the Crunch?" May 8, 2009
For this RADIOLA! I've used mainly selections in which the "shellac sizzle" has been greatly reduced. Because I tend to be skeptical about the miracles of modern technology (and modern everything else), I've endeavored to exercise a light touch in my restorations.

(Many thanks to George, Luigi, Rich, Randy, Chris, and The Codger for technical advice, suggestions, moral support, and contributions of recordings for this program.)

HOW TO STREAM WHCL
After two weeks of getting complaints about people not being able to stream my program, I here offer a brief tutorial on how to listen to the Shoutcast stream of WHCL. If going through the Shoutcast page, click on "Tune In."
The Shoutcast player will then pop up and most likely will not work on your computer. But there's a remedy. Click on the button "Listen in Winamp or Other Player."
This will open a new window and you'll have the option of listening in your default media player. After you choose that option and click on "Save," the next time you access the WHCL stream through the Shoutcast page, the stream will play in your default player.
Problem solved!

SHOUTCAST ISSUES
I note that many listeners were unable to avail themselves of the live WHCL Shoutcast stream for RADIOLA! last week owing to the new "player" that Shoutcast is forcing on its users. What I've been able to determine is that the original playlist (.pls) file still works for the WHCL stream. I'll be happy to send the playlist file as an attachment to all listeners who wish to listen to RADIOLA! or any other WHCL programming. Simply write to me at my public email address and I'll send a reply with the file attached.
I apologize for any inconvenience the new Shoutcast configuration may have caused last week.

My March 7, 2009 Show at Thornberry's Now Posted on Soundclick!
Even though I hadn't played my own stuff in public for over eight years, this show turned out very well. It was so good, in fact, that I've decided to charge 99 cents for mp3 downloads from that performance. (Listening through Soundclick on your computer is free, as always. And there are lots of free mp3 downloads in addition to the ones I'm charging for.)
It was a fun evening--as you will hear!
