"Anything Goes" June 8, 2007

(Week 80)

The Summer Season is officially under way at WHCL--and tonight's playlist reflects an undercurrent of references to local (to the Utica, NY area) current events. Our mad old mayor, Ed Hanna, who left under a cloud in 2000, has decided to regain his post. That's all you need to know, unless you want to go off on a Google quest. Plenty of good music here, and my aircheck will be posted forthwith.

Oh, and it's the start of my third year on the air. If only the stream were working! Well, if you live in the area, tune us in at 88.7 FM. Otherwise, Live 365 will work as well as anything for the time being.

RIAA GHOULS AT IT AGAIN

As yet unsuccessful in their attempt to shake down internet broadcasters, the RIAA is now trying to pry nickels and dimes from the pockets of public radio in an unprecedented grab for royalties. You have to suppose that extends beyond corporate NPR outlets to college and community stations, like WHCL.

Since popular music is now creatively defunct, and cannibalizes an ever-diminishing few riffs and ideas, the RIAA ghouls return to suck the marrow of the bones of the brilliant dead.

RADIOLA! RETURNS FRIDAY JUNE 8 ON WHCL 88.7 FM

To the consternation of those who may have tried to stream or tune in at 8 PM EDT the past two Fridays, there has been a hiatus. The good news is that RADIOLA! will return to the WHCL-FM next Friday, June 8, at 8 PM EDT for a summer season of weekly two-hour programs. The (possibly) bad news is that direct streaming of WHCL may not be available owing to problems with the Shoutcast Computer. The (genuinely) good news is that each Friday's program will be uploaded to my Live365 station within a day or two of the live broadcast.

I'll keep you apprised of the Shoutcast situation. It's no more than a minor concern. If you're listening locally to 88.7 FM, it helps to have a GOOD radio and maybe an external antenna. For some reason, sets made before the mid-90s tend to get better reception of weak stations. So dig out that old relic from the attic, plug 'er in, and wait for the electrician. Happy listening!

"Bad English" May 18, 2007

(Week 79)

UPDATE: This program has now been uploaded to my Live365 station. Owing to interference on my home recording, I have inserted clean soundfiles but have retained my original broadcast commentary (during which there is some noise). Also, I omitted the Waring selection from my Live365 file because I did not realize how truly offensive the lyrics were until I played the recording on air. (The humor of that bygone day was not always gentle.) Also, if I'm going to offend somebody, I want it to be for a good reason. (“A gentleman is one who never hurts anyone's feelings unintentionally.” -- Oscar Wilde)

The songs you are about to hear are standards--only the language is substandard. (For those who are unduly offended by poor usage, I've included a fine classical piece near the end of the program--really! It's a bit of a misnomer, though, since the Danube is actually green.) The Queen's English gets it in the neck at 8 PM EDT on WHCL.

H.R. 2060--CONGRESS TO THE RESCUE?

Congress is introducing 11th-hour legislation to give relief to internet broadcasters, H.R. 2060. Here's the lowdown from savenetradio.org:

The future of Internet radio is in immediate danger. Royalty rates for webcasters have been drastically increased by a recent ruling and are due to go into effect on May 15 (retroactive to Jan 1, 2006!). If the increased rates remain unchanged, the majority of webcasters will go bankrupt and silent on this date. Internet radio needs your help! H.R. 2060, The Internet Radio Equality Act was introduced by Representatives Jay Inslee (D-WA) and Donald Manzullo (R-IL ) to save the Internet radio industry.

Please call your member of Congress and urge that he or she co-sponsor the above legislation. The survival of RADIOLA! and all your other favorite net streams depend upon it.

Do Not Hesitate to Download

We're in for the long haul on this Copyright Royalty Board thing--and there is a possibility now more than ever I will have to pull the plug on my Live365 stream by this July. (The WHCL broadcast and webcast will continue as before.) Therefore, I would urge you to download all the RADIOLA! programs you can HERE. They're now up to date through last Friday's show.

(And though it's a free download, I encourage you to donate to the upkeep of their server--they gratefully accept one-off donations through PayPal.)

I just received this CD in the mail today from my friends Mike and Leah Bezin of the West End Jazz Band. It's an absolute delight. The music is stellar, and the re-creation of a Coon-Sanders' Nighthawks band remote is lots of fun. You can buy the CD HERE. (And, of course, I'll be playing a couple of tracks on RADIOLA! this week.)

AL GALLODORO at the WATERVILLE PUBLIC LIBRARY FRIDAY!

Al Gallodoro, the legendary reedman whom Jimmy Dorsey called "the best saxophone player who ever lived," will be playing with his quartet at 7 PM this Friday, March 23, at the Waterville Public Library (206 White Street, Waterville, NY 13480 Ph. 315 841-4651).
Performing will be Al Gallodoro, sax, bass clarinet, clarinet; JoAnn Chmielowski, piano; Harry Aceto, Bass; and Dave Perazone, Drums.

Al started playing professionally in 1926, and worked with such bandleaders as Isham Jones and Paul Whiteman through the 1930s. Today at 93, Al Gallodoro is still an incredible player. One of only 14 musicians and singers who recorded before 1940 and are still active (along with Svend Asmussen, Johnny Blowers, Lena Horne, Franz Jackson, Herb Jeffries, Lawrence Lucie, Buddy Morrow, Les Paul, George Shearing, Kay Starr, Gerald Wilson, Snooky Young and Zeke Zarchy), Gallodoro is still at 95% of his playing peak, playing phrases that sound completely impossible.

Don't pass up this rare opportunity to hear Al Gallodoro play!

THE "BIG BROADCAST" ARCHIVE IS DEAD

Thanks mostly to this Copyright crackdown, online archives of Rich Conaty's "Big Broadcast" dating back to December 2001 have been removed from the server. That's five years of great programs of salubrious, lovely 20s and 30s pop and jazz gone for--what? So the ravening RIAA/ASCAP ghouls at SoundExchange can throw their weight around? The whole purpose of this equine feces is to actively suppress our cultural heritage and prevent priceless music from being heard. (And there is no price that can be put on it.) It truly and utterly micturates me off.

By that token, I'd advise all readers of this blog to download all my RADIOLA! programs HERE before the jackals get around to killing that archive as well. Those old shows will be all you have after the Copyright Police chase me off Live365.

THE END OF RADIOLA!?

UPDATE: Congress is likely to sit on its hands. Why did we elect these dorks?

I don't normally like to use this page for polemical essays, but I think this matter is something that concerns anyone who listens to and relies on internet radio. The Copyright Royalty Board has announced its plan to raise internet royalty rates--charging internet broadcasters on a per-song, per-listener basis. And these charges will be retroactive through the beginning of last year. This will effectively shut down all programs like RADIOLA! that operate on a tiny (or nonexistent) budget.

What is astonishing--and to my mind unjust--is that 80-year-old recordings should be subject to copyright control at all. The even more appalling fact is that all sound recordings will be kept from the Public Domain until the year 2067. Certainly no artists who recorded in the 1910s and 1920s--and very few who recorded in the 1930s--are in any position to enjoy their royalty payments. The main result of this quirk of the law is to actively suppress the music that we love.

This music clearly belongs in the Public Domain. It is not only a major part of our cultural heritage, it should enrich and inform new music as it emerges. If it utterly disappears, music will wither and become even more banal than it is now. Imagine putting Beethoven or Schubert back under copyright. What would that serve? Similarly, what purpose does it serve (besides enriching the vampires in the moribund music industry) to suppress the music of 80 years ago--music that is vital to our national culture?

I have no problem with living performers and composers demanding some measure of compensation. Yet it has been my experience that many artists are happy just to have their music promoted so they can sell recordings and get people out to their concert venues. Such avenues of exposure would be closed to the less well known and new performers as the self-referential dreck offered on radios throughout the land would prevail.

I've loved the music of the 1920s and 1930s since I was a child, once I was lucky enough to discover its existence. Everyone thought I was weird for loving it, but I knew it was best for me. It wasn't a matter of nostalgia, or of longing for some other time. The music was simply excellent, and better than anything else available to me.

I have to assume that a certain percentage of people are similarly moved, or would be if they had access to these recordings. Rather than being sequestered in a vault somewhere, or on the dusty shelves of a few record collectors, they should be freely broadcast so that they find their audience. And I have a suspicion that their audience would be immense if they were widely available. They shimmer with wit and levity, brim with deep joy, and beat with the pulse of life. And charging admission to them enriches no one except those who would keep them quiet so they can push today's mediocre crud as the real deal.

This may be a lost cause, but those are always the ones worth fighting for. Write your representative in Congress to change this wretched state of affairs, and urge for the repeal of the horrid DMCA itself. There are now so many important matters before Congress (such as the war and civil liberties) that Internet Radio seems minor in comparison. Nonetheless, it is important, personally, to millions--and the death of independent online music stations would make our already bleak lives that much more dreary.

Yes, RADIOLA! will go on--as a radio program. Those who want to hear it will have to stream WHCL on Friday nights (Hamilton College can afford the absurdly high fees) or move to the Utica, NY area and try to pick up the 320 watt station on their FM radios. (That's assuming there's no sporting event and the station is even on the air, which it frequently isn't.) And I'll try to hang in there on Live365 as long as possible. But when the RIAA types start pounding on my door, I'm not going into hock over this--not that I have anything worth pawning.

STATE OF THE ART CYMBAL WORK, 1928

I love this video, even the karaoke-grade vocal from Miss Flynn. "Jazzmania," indeed. It's what I'm currently being treated for. Many more great clips at THIS SITE. (Thanks to Leah of the West End Jazz Band.)

AL GALLODORO in the Mohawk Valley!!

We made the trip to Oneonta last night to see Al Gallodoro at the Sego Cafe, and wound up staying to the end of his show. He killed me on "Sleepy Time Down South." Amazing.

I found out that Al is going to be playing in the Mohawk Valley for two dates (which turn out to have been arranged by WHCL colleague Monk Rowe) here pasted from the Al Gallodoro website:

FRIDAY MARCH 23, WATERVILLE, NY 7PM, GALLODORO QUARTET with JoAnn Chmielowski piano, Tom Wetmore bass. More details to follow! Just put it on your calendar! Thanks! [This will be at the Waterville Public Library.]

THURSDAY, APRIL 5th 7PM Little Falls NY, Al Gallodoro Quartet, Details to follow, but put it on your calendar NOW! Thanks! [This will be at the Little Falls Public Library.]

The Waterville date, unfortunately, is the night I do my show, but I decided to black out my show that night, with the proviso that I expect every Radiola listener within the scope of the FM signal to attend the concert. This man must be heard.

I'll definitely hit both those shows, and probably the March 24th gig at the Sego Cafe as well. It's a great way to deal with the cabin fever.

RADIOLA! sneaks into the studio tonight (in lieu of Jonathan Mead's excellent "Anywhere But Here") for two hours of great old music making some reference to our current picturesque natural disaster. VINCE GIORDANO SWINGS and COMFORT FOOD UPDATE

From the current New Yorker:

NEW YORK SWING DANCE SOCIETY
Feb. 25: Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks get folks moving at the society’s monthly dance party. Manning the most unwieldy of instruments (bass, tuba, bass saxophone), as well as a bulbous vintage Kellogg microphone, Giordano leads a tuxedo-clad band whose ease with early jazz and swing breathes life into a long-gone era. (St. Cyril and St. Methodius Croatian Church, 502 W. 41st St. For more information, visit www.nysds.org.)
Since we sadly won't be able to attend, we must console ourselves with yet more comfort food--such as this excellent mushroom stew (made by me):

WHAT MAKES WINTER TOLERABLE

The perfect steak, bacon, and cheese omelet (made by me)
makes it much easier to deal with this grim reality:
I'll be on the air Monday if the pug (pictured) is able to navigate College Hill with the sled (not pictured).

SPORTS FRIDAY, RADIOLA! MONDAY

Every so often, RADIOLA! pops up on WHCL like Brigadoon, or perhaps the recurrence of some mild skin irritation. Hypothetically, it airs Fridays from 8-10 PM US Eastern Time--but this has rarely been observed in the Hamilton College world where breaks proliferate and constant sporting events demand to be heard.

Nonetheless, a special edition of RADIOLA! will be broadcast Monday, February 19 from 8-10 PM ET. I've managed to book airtime using the ruse of pretending I'm a hockey game. Since very few people will be tuned in, I expect I can get away with playing a couple of hours of nice 1920s and 1930s jazz and pop before anyone catches on. I may stage a bout of high-sticking and put myself in the penalty box to add to the verisimilitude.

And then, there are always the fridge-fresh old programs on my Live365 station. They'll tide you over!

SPORTS, NO RADIOLA!

No RADIOLA! tonight--sorry! Hamilton College sports--either Basketball or Hockey (I know one is played with a puck)--will be heard on WHCL-FM this evening during the RADIOLA! hours.

I'll be back next week with a playlist I'll somehow create between now and then.

RADIOLA! RETURNS TO WHCL FRIDAY 1/26/07 @ 8 PM ET

After what has seemed way too long a break from broadcasting, RADIOLA! will return to the airwaves (and the WHCL internet stream) this Friday at 8 PM. Owing to many interesting occurrences in my bailiwick, I haven't quite nailed down a playlist yet. But I shall--at least in time for Friday's show.

More Variety from the RADIOLA! Vault

WHCL still hasn't signed on for the new season, but I have sought to eliminate listener boredom by posting four shows from my archives on my RADIOLA! Live 365 station, replacing those that I felt had run out of shelf-life. I'll be posting those I replaced soon on a-infos radio project for those who absolutely have to hear them again.

RADIOLA! should be a bona-fide RADIO program again very soon. So help me!

RADIOLA! ON CLEANING HIATUS--INTERNET SHOW SOON!

Since WHCL shut down for Winter Break two weeks ago, I've been remiss in not adding any programming. I wanted to spend some time with my wife, and I also had to de-Collyer the downstairs for New Year's Eve guests. Here are some "after" pictures; the "before" shots have been banned by the Board of Health.

I will be putting together and uploading an internet-only show within the next few days to tide listeners over until WHCL resumes broadcasting.

Happy New Year!

"The Dog Ate My Playlist" December 15, 2006

(Week 66)

So much for writing it on lasagna. Seriously, I thought I would dispense with my "theme" conceit for the last show of the season, and just play a bunch of old favorites (plus one or two great new acquisitions). Just good music tonight at 8 PM EST on WHCL.

(And, before I unravel the playlist, let me remind you to tune in early and listen late--RETRO RADIO--featuring music of the 50s and 60s--at 6 PM and a FROM THE GRASSY KNOLL special on aspartame at 10. Nostalgia This Friday (December 15) on WHCL

Owing to the pre-break schedule Friday, December 15 of Hamilton College radio station WHCL broadcasting will start at 6 PM EST with THE BIG SOUND OF RETRO RADIO, hosted by Mark Fuller, which sounds EXACTLY like the local programming you heard growing up in the 50s and 60s. Listening to Mark is like entering a real time warp--since he has been a DJ since the 1960s (and makes use of all the pertinent jingles, commercials, and records) he has the tone JUST RIGHT.

RETRO RADIO is the ideal lead-in to RADIOLA! which will air at its usual time of 8 PM, and will turn back the clock even further, occasionally before the dawn of radio itself. (The playlist will be posted as soon as I determine what it is.)

At 10 PM a special public affairs broadcast featuring Vyzygoth and Cori Brackett on the dangers of aspartame will be aired. This is an excellent program, from Vyz's "FROM THE GRASSY KNOLL" series, and I commend it to your attention.

After that, WHCL is off the air for Winter Break. Merry Christmas!

RADIOLA! will air this Saturday (Dec. 2) at 6 PM EST

The cabin fever was getting to me, so when a slot opened up on Saturday at 6 PM EST on WHCL I had to offer to sub. I realize I'll be competing with Garrison Keillor for the attentions of the tote-bag brigade. Therefore, I'll try to make it wholesome, and wistful, and poignant-like. I'll attempt to weave a spell of nostalgic melancholy over last week's leftovers, one that will have you sobbing into your Kraft dinners and three-bean-salads.

BLAH!

It looks like there will be an absence of RADIOLA! on WHCL for the third consecutive week as Hamilton Hockey gets under way next Friday. Also, I must apologize for the lack of new programming on my Live365 station. I've been convalescing from a bit of a cold and have done plenty of reading (mostly Terry Pratchett--good funny stuff for the sickbed) but have given no thought to my show (or, I regret to say, my bored listeners) other than to spend way too much money on eBay 78s (ostensibly for the program).

I will endeavor to get something assembled this week for the Live365 stream, at any rate.

If You Download RADIOLA! Please Contribute

If you use the excellent free service The a-Infos Radio Project to download old RADIOLA! programs, you should really kick in some money to keep the site going. There are hundreds of great programs on the site, most far better than what you hear on the corporate AM-FM outlets. So, if you would, PLEASE CONTRIBUTE.

Back to Hiatusville

Owing to this Friday's basketball game at Hamilton College (which justifiably takes priority) and the subsequent Thanksgiving Holiday (during which the station will be closed), RADIOLA! will not be heard on WHCL for the next two weeks.

HOWEVER, if you MUST have it, it WILL be heard, round the clock, on Live365 as always. As a gesture of mercy to those who are thrown upon the expedient of listening to my reruns I will attempt to post some choice web-only material to reward their attention. (Leftover turkey once a day is enough.)

Stray bits of nourishing RADIOLA! from the back of the fridge (still perfectly good) may also be found HERE.

In two weeks time, I will return, tanned and ready to regale you with my exploits in Hiatusville.
