CARMEN CARAMANICA TRIO--TINY'S APRIL 12

Carmen Caramanica, Cosmo Castellano, and Rick Compton will play one of their all-too-infrequent gigs on April 12 (8-11 PM) at Tiny's Grill (1014 State St., Utica NY). They play music somewhat more modern than that featured on RADIOLA!--but they are remarkable musicians, and this performance is not to be missed by anyone who appreciates excellent jazz.

The Harlem Blues & Jazz Band--April 12 & 13

This weekend, The Harlem Blues & Jazz Band billed as "The World's Most Authentic Swing Band" will be appearing locally for two performances. On Saturday, April 12 at 3 PM the group will play at the Utica Public Library, 303 Genesee St., Utica NY (sponsored by the Jazz, Blues & Libraries Too Concert Series). On Sunday, April 13, they will perform at the Filius Events Barn at Hamilton College in Clinton, NY (sponsored by The Jazz Archive, BSU and Dean of Faculty Office). The Hamilton concert begins at 3 PM, with a pre-concert meet-and-greet at 2 PM. The events are free and open to the public.

The Harlem Blues & Jazz Band is the world's most authentic swing band. It stars veteran jazz and blues musicians whose roots reach to the classic period of the '20s and '30s. Together since 1973, these “originals” actually “jumped” at the Woodside and “stomped” at the Savoy, with Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway, Count Basie, Lionel Hampton, Fats Waller, Louis, Armstrong, Billie Holiday, and other jazz greats. These are the artists who created a new genre, of music for America. The Harlem Blues & Jazz Band, touring since 1976, has been called “a national treasure,” and has been enthusiastically embraced by audiences around the world.

AL GALLODORO CLOSES THE SEGO IN STYLE!

Last night, The Al Gallodoro Quartet (Al on sax, JoAnn Chmielowski on piano, Tom Wetmore on bass, and Joe Tokarowski on drums) played the last gig at the Sego Cafe in Oneonta. It's a sad fact of life that many delightful venues close, but last night's performance was a real New Orleans-style send-off to the Sego. Al and the band played brilliantly to a packed house--a standing-room-only crowd, at one point--and there was joy mingled with the regret of closing. "The Hour of Parting" (a heartbreakingly beautiful number that Al featured on his "Out of Nowhere" CD) literally came all too soon. But after "The Hour of Parting" Al finished the night with Ray Noble's "Cherokee"--and swung it hard.

Chances are that Al and his group will find another venue shortly. But the last night at the Sego was sad, and delightful--and Al Gallodoro at his best.

AL GALLODORO'S LAST SEGO GIG SATURDAY!

Owing to the imminent closing of the Sego Cafe at 291 Main St., Oneonta, sax virtuoso Al Gallodoro will be playing his last gig at the venue this Saturday, March 22, 8-11 PM. Arrangements are being made to host Al and his Quartet elsewhere in the vicinity, but this marks the end of his four-year run at the delightful and intimate Sego. (Press release to follow.)

Dr. Alfred J. Gallodoro (born June 20, 1913)

At nearly 95 years young Gallodoro continues to thrill his listeners with his impeccable musicianship and incredible mastery of his instruments. His admirers include more than just saxophone aficionados--he recently appeared twice at Cornell University's Weill Medical College for concerts AND as the subject of an extensive interview on longevity and vitality. Gallodoro was called upon in April 2006 to perform George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue with the NYC Harmonie Ensemble, with conductor Steven Richman, a piece which Al performed many thousands of times with Paul Whiteman during their long association. This Gallodoro 2006 performance of Rhapsody in Blue is in the works, we will sent you a release date in a future e-mail! Al is one of only 13 artists who recorded before 1940 that is still active and recording, During a professional career spanning an amazing nine decades, Gallodoro has played his saxophone, clarinet and bass clarinet in all forms and venues of music--from Vaudeville houses to New Orleans speak-easies, from nightclubs to symphonies, from Carnegie Hall to international jazz festivals (North Sea and Breda, Holland!) and even the Ringling Brothers Circus! In his association of nearly 4 decades with Whiteman, Gallodoro played lead 1st alto sax, as well as clarinet and bass clarinet for the orchestra; hence, the moniker “Triple Threat!” He was a regularly featured “front stage” soloist on live broadcasts spanning from the 1930’s through the 1970’s, and even continues those live radio performances today with regular appearances on Northeast Public Radio! In fact, Gallodoro has done more live on-the-air saxophone and clarinet solos than any other performer in history.

Also a classical performer in his own right, Gallodoro worked for many years under symphonic conductors Arturo Toscanini and Leopold Stokowski. Thus, one can often detect a classical vein running throughout his art of improvisation. Ferde Grofé was so impressed by Gallodoro’s art that he composed Gallodoro’s Serenade for saxophone and piano (1957) to specifically emphasize Al’s style, and showcase his technique. The piece (released on Bridge Records, 2006) had its premier New York City performance and recording when Al was an energetic 91 years old, with pianist Lincoln Mayorga. Perhaps it is his unique ability to bridge jazz and classical idioms that so endears him to a broad variety of fans.

AL GALLODORO was featured in 2002 on CBS’ Sunday Morning, and has also been the topic of a PBS documentary, the Al Gallodoro Story. In 2005 Alfred J. Gallodoro received an Honorary Doctoral Degree from Hartwick College in recognition of a lifetime of extraordinary achievement in music performance and teaching. He can arguably be regarded as the greatest saxophone/clarinet virtuoso in history.

As partner with manager/pianist and long term collaborator JoAnn Bertone Chmielowski, Gallodoro’s independent label Chmusic Productions/Golden Rooster Records Al has added 5 CD’s and a music video to his credit. His most recent release DAYBREAK – Lyrical Jazz (April 2007), has a specific goal: to bring a renewed awareness of the lyrical sound of the saxophone to mainstream jazz. With a bit of Southern flair, credited to his Birmingham and New Orleans roots, the Mediterranean influence of his Sicilian heritage, and the sounds attributed to nearly six decades of working in New York City, Dr. Alfred J. SEGO CAFE TO CLOSE (PRESS RELEASE)

The Sego Café, located at 291 Main Street in Oneonta, will close its doors effective Monday, March 24th.

“When we took over the Sego Café in 2006, our vision was to create a comfortable bistro and music venue for the area’s adult population, to help bring people to downtown Oneonta, and to provide opportunities for local musicians and artists,” said Alan Cleinman, President of SEGO Management, Inc., the restaurant’s owner. “Thanks to the hard work of our team and the support of many, we have been highly successful on almost every front,” he said.

“Unfortunately, while revenue has climbed each month, it has not climbed faster then costs. After nearly two decades of low food inflation, prices for staples such as bread, milk, eggs, and flour are rising sharply, surging in the past year at double-digit rates. Milk prices have increased by 26 percent over last year while egg prices have jumped by 40 percent. Further, we see no end to this inflationary cycle. We believe that our customers will not support the required price increases necessary for the Café to become profitable under its current format. Accordingly, we are closing the Sego Café and will be exploring other operating formats,” he said.

Through an arrangement with Elena’s at 281 Main Street, all outstanding gift certificates and coupons will be honored. Further, the Café’s award-winning coffee brand, Panache, will also be available at Elena’s. The Sego Café will likely continue as an entertainment facility and will be available for special events and catering functions. The facility is for sale or sublease.

Sego Café will wrap up its activities with two incredible nights of music. On Friday, March 21st, the King of New York Blues, Ernie Williams, will be entertaining guests from 8pm to 11pm. Ernie will be followed on Saturday, March 22nd, with the impresario Mr. Al Gallodoro, for the final Sego event.

Mr. Cleinman further stated, “This decision has not come easily and is based solely on current operating economics. I want to thank all of our loyal customers; our great Sego team; our musicians and artist friends, and our vendors, for their support.” he said. “We welcome all of our friends to enjoy a last Sego event this coming weekend.”

MURIEL'S TREASURE--THE REAL MUSIC OF THE CARIBBEAN

Since I've been on WHCL hiatus, I've discovered a number of excellent music programs. One especially worthy of mention is Muriel's Treasure, hosted by WFMU radio host, author, and record producer Irwin Chusid. Muriel's Treasure features plenty of classic Calypso, which I've always enjoyed and have often played on RADIOLA! There are also more modern Caribbean styles, such as Soca. It's fun, witty, joyous music and should be all over the airwaves--but so far this is the only true Caribbean program I've found.

Muriel's Treasure is not currently being broadcast, but there is a wealth of material in the archives, which are also available as a podcast.

Gallodoro was called upon in April 2006 to perform George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue with the NYC Harmonie Ensemble under conductor Steven Richman. The Rhapsody in Blue is a piece for which he holds the distinction of a world’s record--over 10,000 performances throughout the 1930’s and 40’s with the “King of Jazz” Paul Whiteman. Mr. Richman's release of this Gallodoro 2006 performance of Rhapsody in Blue is now in the works, we will sent you a release date in a future e-mail! CLARIFICATION: Even though ASV Living Era has been put out of business by the corporate greedheads at Universal Music Group, I need to stress that before you go "stealing" Living Era CDs you should make every effort to purchase them (new or used) from small, independent music dealers who sell through eBay, Amazon, etc., since they really need your monetary support and encouragement. Buying from your local record store (if any still exist in this iPod-blighted land) is better yet. Only if the Living Era CD you are looking for is not available by any other means should you start mooching home-burned copies from your collector friends. And this applies only to Living Era and other defunct labels, not current reissuers who are struggling to stay alive amid this "send me a file" mentality. If you stop buying, they'll stop producing. So spend a buck.
The news that the Universal Music Group took over ASV Living Era with the sole intent of putting the label out of business has already spoiled my new year. I've assembled an internet-only program that celebrates the great budget reissue label and mourns its unnecessary demise. (Therein I also suggest that people freely copy and distribute their Living Era CDs to their friends, since Universal is intent on suppressing all music other than the modern trash it considers profitable.)

UTICA - A benefit concert for Elwood’s Coffeehouse & Roadshow will take place Sunday, Jan. 13 at The Electric Company, Varick Street.

Elwood’s is being torn down Friday after it suffered severe damage in a fire that began next-door at 612 Columbia St. and killed 22-year-old Brittany Platt.

Anthony “Zee” Donaldson, owner of nearby The Electric Company, said he wanted to do what he could to help Elwood’s owner Dan Olah rebuild.

Olah and his girlfriend/business partner also lived upstairs from the coffeehouse.
The concert’s lineup includes Choke Slam, Paul Fullem, Joe Sweet and Jeremy Petrie.

Tickets are a $5 donation, which will go directly to the Elwood’s fund, Donaldson said.


UPDATE: Elwood's will be torn down. The damage was too extensive to the structure, and Dan Olah and Cathy DiCastro are in the process of salvaging what they can from the building. Elwood's Coffee House, a wonderful restaurant, cafe, and music venue, burned last night. Even more sadly, there was loss of life in the apartment building next door where the fire started. Elwood's was extensively damaged, and may have to be torn down.

My wife and I ate there numerous times, and found the food and atmosphere delightful. Our thoughts go out to the owners, Dan and Cathy. We loved Elwood's and appreciate all that it contributed to our city. We hope that they will reopen.

"Now's the time to give your share . . ."

Yesterday, I received a copy of the original 1929 sheet music to my RADIOLA! theme, "Wake Up! Chill'un, Wake Up!" stated as having lyrics by Jo Trent and music by Willard Robison. What is remarkable is that on the Ipana Troubadors recording (Columbia 1779-D) I use as the theme, Willard Robison himself sings, "Love is in power/Now's the time to give your share," while in the printed sheet music and on every other recording of the tune, the lyric is "Now's the time to get your share."

I have to assume that the composition of the song was somewhat more collaborative than otherwise indicated, and that Robison preferred the more "giving" version. Perhaps the change came after the song was published, and it could not be amended. It's a deeply philosophical song, with amazing imagery and a timeless message. Changing the more selfish "get" to the more emotionally mature "give" is a logical--and vast--improvement. (After all, in order to get love you have to give love--which some of my friends in their 40s are still figuring out.)

Robison's change makes the song nearly perfect. I'd have to consider his reading of the lyric to be the definitive version, supplanting even the published version. And it's certainly something to consider in this season of giving.

THE BIGGEST MUSIC BARGAIN IN AMERICA

A couple of years ago I bought Glen Richards' mp3 CD of Hot Dance and Jazz selections. Since then, he has added many more recordings to his archive, and you can buy something like 600 hot dance sides on three CD-ROMs for $60. (Or buy the CDs individually for $20 apiece.) These discs play in your computer and on mp3-CD players, and you can make CDs of the soundfiles to play on your home stereo or in the car. A deal like this defines the word "bargain." Just a quick note to let you know that the Archive MP3 CD-ROMs and Audio CDs are now available. The Archive MP3 CD-ROMs consist of 3 CD-ROMs with the MP3 files that were released in 2002-2004, 2005-2006 and all the MP3s released in 2007 (including those that haven't appeared yet on the site for the December release). Each disk is packed in a paper sleeve and is $20US, plus shipping to anywhere in the world.

The Audio CDs consist of 7 volumes, each containing recordings released in 2007, in the Audio CD format (just like you'd purchase in a record store). Each Audio CD is packed in a jewel case with a four-page booklet, and is $14US, plus shipping to anywhere in the world.

I've made several unsuccessful attempts to log in to the A-Infos Radio Project where I have about two years of programs archived. Does anyone know what happened to this site?

UPDATE: It came up a minute ago--and then was elusive again. It's like freaking Brigadoon. But at least it's out there--with all my old shows--somewhere.
