NOW MORE SHOWS ON LIVE365 THAN EVER!

CORRECTION: My Live365 station has been upgraded to 300 megabytes, which means almost 30 hours of programming on the stream.

Yesterday I uploaded a few more shows owing to what seemed a 500 mb capacity. This corrected itself to the actual 300 mb storage limit. Nonetheless, I've left up a couple of YOWZAH! shows (broadcast in July and August 2007 over Utica College station WPNR). Included in this batch is my "Voyage of Life" show--a musical interpretation of Thomas Cole's four-painting allegory of human existence.

This still means that there is more programming on RADIOLA! on Live365 than ever before. The simultaneous free listener limit has been lowered to ten by Live365, so in order to insure access to the stream you may have to invest in a Live365 VIP membership. Doing so through this link will also help offset my costs in broadcasting on Live365, which have increased substantially since last year.

CATHERINE RUSSELL AT THE STANLEY MONDAY, JULY 7 AT 8 PM!!

Catherine (or "Cat") Russell is going to appear in Utica at the recently renovated Stanley Theatre for Utica Monday Night at 8 PM on July 7. This is a must-see performance. Cat is the daughter of the legendary Luis Russell, who worked with King Oliver, Red Allen, and Louis Armstrong, to name but a few. Cat's new album "Sentimental Streak" features her delightful interpretations of many jazz standards, with appropriate accompaniment. AL GALLODORO'S 95th BIRTHDAY!

UPDATE: Al played brilliantly to a packed house at his birthday celebration. On the way home, we listened to his new CD (of a 1969 performance) and he sounds as good as he did 40 years ago.






On Saturday, June 21, the Sego Cafe (291 Main St., Oneonta, NY) will reopen for one night only: Al Gallodoro will be entertaining guests at from 8pm to 11pm on the occasion of this 95th birthday. Doors open at 7pm. There will be a $9.50 cover charge which includes your first drink. Joining Al will be long-time piano accompanist, JoAnn Bertone Chmielowski, Larry Trott on Bass, and Lou Colone on drums, and other fine guest musicians. Doors will open at 7PM. Appetizers will be available (and of course birthday cake will be served). No reservations accepted, first come, first served.

This special evening will also celebrate the release of a new CD, A MOMENT IN TIME, which captures a live performance Al made in Birmingham Alabama in 1969.

Al Gallodoro holds the distinction of of playing more on-the-air live clarinet and saxophone solos than other player in history. Beginning his career at the age of 13, he has played for Vaudeville to Symphonies, Carnegie Hall to small cafes, from Europe's North Sea to New Orleans Jazz Festivals, and even continues the live radio performances he was known for during his long career to this day. And even more amazingly, at 95 he is one of the longest continually performing musicians in the world. As a member of the Paul Whiteman Orchestra, radio staff orchestras, and playing under the batons of Arturo Toscanini and Leopold Stokowski, and more currently, conductor Steven S. Richman, in addition to freelance work, Gallodoro's fine playing, the majority of it taken from live performances, has been included on countless recordings.

Gallodoro's latest CD, A Moment In Time captures a live performance made in 1969, at the Roma Country Club in Birmingham Alabama. A southern flair, credited to Al Gallodoro's Birmingham and New Orleans roots and the Mediterranean influence of his Sicilian heritages gives this live concert a unique spark. At the pinnacle of clarinet and saxophone technique, Gallodoro achieves a seemingly impossible flow of double and triple tonguing, with phrasing that is embellished in a highly ornate, yet understandable style. This melodically dazzling evening on saxophone and clarinet will enchant the listener with its Minute Waltz, jazz standards, as well as ethnic pieces such as the Beer Barrel Polka and When Irish Eyes are Smiling. What particularly stands out is Al's "My Father's Italian Polka", which he never knew the name for, so he has titled it as such, in memory of Antonio Gallodoro. without written music, the melody was passed to Al, then a young child in Birmingham, by his father, himself a clarinet player. The CD will transport the listener right into a steamy southern country club evening.

The CD will be available at the concert and at Al's web-site www.algallodoro.com. A Moment in Time was produced by Oneonta based Chmusic Productions, a small local independent production company co-owned by JoAnn Chmielowski and Al Gallodoro, recordings courtesy of Golden Rooster Records. Chmusic Productions has the distinction of producing many of Al Gallodoro's finest older recordings with the expertise of Dryhill Studio's engineer Andris Balins, who specializes in preservation and remastering. Dryhill Studios is also located in Oneonta, New York.

CARMEN CARAMANICA TRIO--TINY'S APRIL 12

Carmen Caramanica, Cosmo Castellano, and Rick Compton will play one of their all-too-infrequent gigs on April 12 (8-11 PM) at Tiny's Grill (1014 State St., Utica NY). They play music somewhat more modern than that featured on RADIOLA!--but they are remarkable musicians, and this performance is not to be missed by anyone who appreciates excellent jazz.

The Harlem Blues & Jazz Band--April 12 & 13

This weekend, The Harlem Blues & Jazz Band billed as "The World's Most Authentic Swing Band" will be appearing locally for two performances. On Saturday, April 12 at 3 PM the group will play at the Utica Public Library, 303 Genesee St., Utica NY (sponsored by the Jazz, Blues & Libraries Too Concert Series). On Sunday, April 13, they will perform at the Filius Events Barn at Hamilton College in Clinton, NY (sponsored by The Jazz Archive, BSU and Dean of Faculty Office). The Hamilton concert begins at 3 PM, with a pre-concert meet-and-greet at 2 PM. The events are free and open to the public.

The Harlem Blues & Jazz Band is the world's most authentic swing band. It stars veteran jazz and blues musicians whose roots reach to the classic period of the '20s and '30s. Together since 1973, these “originals” actually “jumped” at the Woodside and “stomped” at the Savoy, with Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway, Count Basie, Lionel Hampton, Fats Waller, Louis, Armstrong, Billie Holiday, and other jazz greats. These are the artists who created a new genre, of music for America. The Harlem Blues & Jazz Band, touring since 1976, has been called “a national treasure,” and has been enthusiastically embraced by audiences around the world.

AL GALLODORO CLOSES THE SEGO IN STYLE!

Last night, The Al Gallodoro Quartet (Al on sax, JoAnn Chmielowski on piano, Tom Wetmore on bass, and Joe Tokarowski on drums) played the last gig at the Sego Cafe in Oneonta. It's a sad fact of life that many delightful venues close, but last night's performance was a real New Orleans-style send-off to the Sego. Al and the band played brilliantly to a packed house--a standing-room-only crowd, at one point--and there was joy mingled with the regret of closing. "The Hour of Parting" (a heartbreakingly beautiful number that Al featured on his "Out of Nowhere" CD) literally came all too soon. But after "The Hour of Parting" Al finished the night with Ray Noble's "Cherokee"--and swung it hard.

Chances are that Al and his group will find another venue shortly. But the last night at the Sego was sad, and delightful--and Al Gallodoro at his best.
