DROP.IO DOWNLOADS TO CEASE DEC. 15

Before everyone panics and starts writing to me, I just discovered that Drop.io is allowing no new uploads and all material on their servers will be deleted by December 15. This means that you should go back through and download everything from Drop.io you can from my blog archives to your drive before that date.

I will upload these shows to alternate services as fast as I can. They won't be lost, since they exist on multiple hard drives. I will be using 4Shared for my new shows for the time being, and of course continue to upload 64k versions to A-Infos Radio.

BEAR CAT JAZZ BAND AT GELSTON CASTLE SEPT. 19

On Sunday, September 19 at 1 PM, the historic Gelston Castle Estate (former home of Mstislav Rostropovich) will host the lively traditional jazz and swing of the Bear Cat Jass Band. The Bear Cat Jass Band was formed in Syracuse 53 years ago by cornetist Dick Ames. Mr. Ames, now 90, still leads and plays with the group. The band's repertoire includes jazz classics by Jelly Roll Morton, King Oliver, and Louis Armstrong, numbers from the "trad revival" era featured by Lu Watters and Clancy Hayes, and the early swing of Duke Ellington and others. The Bear Cat "sound" is unique and unforgettable owing to the foundation of a bass sax (or two) underlying the excellent and disciplined musicianship of the band.

The Bear Cat Jass Band consists of Dick Ames (Leader & Cornet), Jeff Stockham (Cornet, Trombone, Vocals), Bill Palange (Trombone, Vocals), Carl Borek (Clarinet, Soprano Sax, Alto Sax, Bass Sax), Tom McKay (Clarinet, Soprano Sax, Alto Sax, Bass Sax), Drew Frech (Tenor Banjo, Plectrum Banjo, Vocals), Jerry Exline (Piano, Tuba, Vocals), Joe Smithling (Drums).

Admission is ten dollars, and food and beverages will be available. Dancers welcome.

Directions to Gelston Castle Estate: From I-90 - Take Exit 30 Herkimer/Mohawk - After Toll take Route 28 South 3 miles to Robinson Road. (Dennisons Corners) Make a left onto Robinson Road - Go 3.5 miles (passing main parking lot) Gelston Castle Estate sign on right, turn right, go through gate, and follow road to house.

JASS JAM SESSION JULY 18 IN SYRACUSE!

The Jazz Appreciation Society of Syracuse will host a jam session from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, July 18, at McNamara’s Pub in Camillus. Admission is free and the public is welcome.

JASS was founded 38 years ago to promote New Orleans-style jazz in Central New York. The JASS jam sessions traditionally conclude with the tune “When the Saints Go Marchin’ In.”

Area musicians are invited to bring their instruments and sit in with the JASS rhythm section.

Others expected to perform include JASS founder and president emeritus, Dick Ames on cornet, JASS President Bobby Morris on trombone, Vice President Burt Dunlap on tuba and director Pat Carroll on cornet.

An electric piano will be provided, and jazz vocalists are encouraged to participate.

McNamara’s Pub is located at 5600 Newport Road between Route 5 and Route 695. Food and beverages will be available at the pub.

For JASS information, call 652-0547.
To contact McNamara’s, call 672-8872.

The Jazz Appreciation Society of Syracuse is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and presentation of traditional New Orleans jazz.
