Nice selection of songs as always, Andy. Thanks! Especially I liked George Bias's Dixie's Prodigal Song. It seems that nobody else ever recorded it. Is this the same mann who also sang with McKinney's Cotton Pickers? I'm wondering since here his voice sounds too high. Is it possible that you somehow played the record in wrong speed?

Thanks--I'm glad you liked the show!

I played it at 78 RPM. I generally check the speed using a musical reference (a Hohner Melodica played along with the record). He did seem to have a rather high pitched voice there and on "Ain't Misbehavin'."

Checking Rust, I find that Bias did record a couple of sides with McKinney in 1930. I'll listen and comment further.

The vocal on "Dixie's Prodigal Son" sounds about right compared to Bias' singing on "After All You're All I'm After" and "I Miss a Little Miss." I'm playing the last two off the Frog compilation "Cotton Picker's Scat."

Singing within a band arrangement in the key required versus singing with one's own piano arrangement in one's preferred key may account for the difference. Even so, "Dixie's Prodigal Son" is in A flat, which is not excessively high.
