I love this video, even the karaoke-grade vocal from Miss Flynn. "Jazzmania," indeed. It's what I'm currently being treated for. Many more great clips at THIS SITE. (Thanks to Leah of the West End Jazz Band.)
A weekly program hosted by Andy Senior featuring great music from 1900 through 1940 and streaming on the internet at radiola365.com.

AL GALLODORO in the Mohawk Valley!!
We made the trip to Oneonta last night to see Al Gallodoro at the Sego Cafe, and wound up staying to the end of his show. He killed me on "Sleepy Time Down South." Amazing.
Al started playing professionally in 1926, and worked with such bandleaders as Isham Jones and Paul Whiteman through the 1930s. Today at 93, Al Gallodoro is still an incredible player. One of only 14 musicians and singers who recorded before 1940 and are still active (along with Svend Asmussen, Johnny Blowers, Lena Horne, Franz Jackson, Herb Jeffries, Lawrence Lucie, Buddy Morrow, Les Paul, George Shearing, Kay Starr, Gerald Wilson, Snooky Young and Zeke Zarchy), Gallodoro is still at 95% of his playing peak, playing phrases that sound completely impossible.
I found out that Al is going to be playing in the Mohawk Valley for two dates (which turn out to have been arranged by WHCL colleague Monk Rowe) here pasted from the Al Gallodoro website:
FRIDAY MARCH 23, WATERVILLE, NY 7PM, GALLODORO QUARTET with JoAnn Chmielowski piano, Tom Wetmore bass. More details to follow! Just put it on your calendar! Thanks! [This will be at the Waterville Public Library.]
THURSDAY, APRIL 5th 7PM Little Falls NY, Al Gallodoro Quartet, Details to follow, but put it on your calendar NOW! Thanks! [This will be at the Little Falls Public Library.]
The Waterville date, unfortunately, is the night I do my show, but I decided to black out my show that night, with the proviso that I expect every Radiola listener within the scope of the FM signal to attend the concert. This man must be heard.
I'll definitely hit both those shows, and probably the March 24th gig at the Sego Cafe as well. It's a great way to deal with the cabin fever.

VINCE GIORDANO SWINGS and COMFORT FOOD UPDATE
From the current New Yorker:
NEW YORK SWING DANCE SOCIETY
Feb. 25: Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks get folks moving at the society’s monthly dance party. Manning the most unwieldy of instruments (bass, tuba, bass saxophone), as well as a bulbous vintage Kellogg microphone, Giordano leads a tuxedo-clad band whose ease with early jazz and swing breathes life into a long-gone era. (St. Cyril and St. Methodius Croatian Church, 502 W. 41st St. For more information, visit www.nysds.org.)
Since we sadly won't be able to attend, we must console ourselves with yet more comfort food--such as this excellent mushroom stew (made by me):

SPORTS FRIDAY, RADIOLA! MONDAY
Every so often, RADIOLA! pops up on WHCL like Brigadoon, or perhaps the recurrence of some mild skin irritation. Hypothetically, it airs Fridays from 8-10 PM US Eastern Time--but this has rarely been observed in the Hamilton College world where breaks proliferate and constant sporting events demand to be heard.
Nonetheless, a special edition of RADIOLA! will be broadcast Monday, February 19 from 8-10 PM ET. I've managed to book airtime using the ruse of pretending I'm a hockey game. Since very few people will be tuned in, I expect I can get away with playing a couple of hours of nice 1920s and 1930s jazz and pop before anyone catches on. I may stage a bout of high-sticking and put myself in the penalty box to add to the verisimilitude.
And then, there are always the fridge-fresh old programs on my Live365 station. They'll tide you over!

SPORTS, NO RADIOLA!
No RADIOLA! tonight--sorry! Hamilton College sports--either Basketball or Hockey (I know one is played with a puck)--will be heard on WHCL-FM this evening during the RADIOLA! hours.
I'll be back next week with a playlist I'll somehow create between now and then.
