Admission & Vendors
General admission: $20.00 covers buyer’s admission for two days (Friday & Saturday). Saturday only admission is $10.00. Early buyers will be admitted Thursday evening after 7:30 pm for $40.00.
Doors open 8:00 am on Friday & Saturday.
Vendor space: All tables are 6 ft x 3 ft. Cost in advance is $70.00 per table for 2 days or $40 for one day, 50% deposit required. On or after June 18th, cost will be $80.00 per table (2 days) on a space available basis.
Dealer Setup: Dealers may set up on Thursday night after 7:30 pm. The room will not be available prior to that hour.
Rare vintage videos each evening after 8:00 pm: Admission free with Bash admission or $5 each night for film show only.
Friday: Jazz collector and film historian David Weiner will present two hours of rare film and TV clips featuring jazz solos by Eddie Lang, Louis Armstrong, Eubie Blake, John Coltrane, Pee Wee Russell, Sonny Stitt, Johnny Hodges, Willie “The Lion” Smith, Eddie Miller, Joe Venuti, Stan Getz, Dizzy Gillespie; the orchestras & combos of Count Basie, Eddie Condon, Duke Ellington, Jack Hylton, Ray Noble, Johnny Green; and vocalists Ethel Waters, Nick Lucas, Ruth Etting, the Brox Sisters, Ella Fitzgerald, Kate Smith, Joe Williams, Gertrude Niesen, Helen Ward, Bing Crosby.
Also, after the films, rare record playoffs / challenges hosted by Henry Schmidt.
Saturday: Ron Hutchinson, co-founder of The Vitaphone Project, will present a largely previously unseen collection of early sound jazz and vaudeville short subjects.

For this RADIOLA! I've used mainly selections in which the "shellac sizzle" has been greatly reduced. Because I tend to be skeptical about the miracles of modern technology (and modern everything else), I've endeavored to exercise a light touch in my restorations.

HOW TO STREAM WHCL
UPDATE: Stream WHCL from THIS LINK. It's much easier!
After two weeks of getting complaints about people not being able to stream my program, I here offer a brief tutorial on how to listen to the Shoutcast stream of WHCL. If going through the Shoutcast page, click on "Tune In."
The Shoutcast player will then pop up and most likely will not work on your computer. But there's a remedy. Click on the button "Listen in Winamp or Other Player."
This will open a new window and you'll have the option of listening in your default media player. After you choose that option and click on "Save," the next time you access the WHCL stream through the Shoutcast page, the stream will play in your default player.

I note that many listeners were unable to avail themselves of the live WHCL Shoutcast stream for RADIOLA! last week owing to the new "player" that Shoutcast is forcing on its users. What I've been able to determine is that the original playlist (.pls) file still works for the WHCL stream. I'll be happy to send the playlist file as an attachment to all listeners who wish to listen to RADIOLA! or any other WHCL programming. Simply write to me at my public email address and I'll send a reply with the file attached.
I apologize for any inconvenience the new Shoutcast configuration may have caused last week.

NO RADIOLA! FRIDAY
WHCL is officially off-air for Hamilton College Spring Break and I think I'll not warm up the transmitter this week.
MySpace is full of crap!
UPDATE (April 4, 2009): Apparently, MySpace has fixed the problem and the link to this site is no longer blocked. The remark about head lice still rankles, though.
When attempting to send a link to a MySpace contact yesterday, I checked the sent message and found that the link (to my RADIOLA! blog at http://radiolablog.blogspot.com) had been disabled, and the following insulting message displayed:
The link you are trying to visit has been disabled.
You have reached a link that is no longer in service. That means the link was very naughty, and, much like head lice, had to be eliminated before it spread.
You may be asking yourself, 'Hey, what was it about that link that got it in trouble?' An excellent question! Usually, it's one of the following reasons:
- The link was spam! No one likes spammers, and we don't like their links.
- You almost got phished! There are people out there who want to steal your MySpace password. They want to log in as you and send spam, harass your friends, change your profile, and generally run amok. Phishing pages are usually designed to look like MySpace to trick you. Other sites may also ask for your MySpace login information to customize your profile, insert videos or slide shows, track visitors, or any number of other things.Don't make it easy for them. ONLY USE YOUR MYSPACE LOGIN INFO ON WWW.MYSPACE.COM!!
- Viruses are not fun! Neither is adware, spyware, or malware. We cut the links to places that are known sources of infection.
If you really did want to check out some spam, viruses, or phishing pages, we're really sorry to have interrupted. We're sure you can find it elsewhere.There's plenty on the Internet
It seems that MySpace has disabled all links to Blogger sites because of a profusion of "spam" sites ending in "blogspot.com." Fine. It's easy to set up sites with free Blogger, and I'm sure many unscrupulous and malevolent people do so. That could have been stated in the message, rather than libel about "head lice," "spam," and "phishing." The irony about head lice in particular was not funny. Whoever thought of that should be flogged.
My RADIOLA! blog has been extant since 2005 as a repository for my radio playlists and for links to many other vintage music programs and sites. It is one of the most visited vintage music sites on the internet, and if you type "radiola" into Google, it comes up at the top of the list.
So there's a total lack of tact and sensitivity here. Whenever I'd send my link to anyone on MySpace, I'd look like a phishing, spamming jerk. And I don't send viruses to people. I keep a hygenic machine in this house.
As for "spam," which MySpace seems to strenuously object to, my MySpace home page is clotted with it. There are all manner of sleazy ads for teeth whiteners, one-night-stand dating sites, online casinos, etc. And yes, I know that cheesy advertising pays for the bandwidth I'm using. But it seems that MySpace is a tad inconsistent.
If I did not rely on MySpace as a means to promote and publicize my radio program, I would delete my profile and be done with it. I still may do so. I've already deleted my Facebook page because it was too wearying to participate in all the childishness of e-gifts and online party games. And I refuse to try Twitter. The idea of letting people know (in 140 characters or less) every time I make a sandwich or clear my sinuses is utterly appalling to me.
The libel of the above message may be no big deal to some if nothing much matters to them because there's always tomorrow. But I'm way over the hill, and I find it tiresome to try to be cool and "go with the flow" regarding personal insults. I spend thousands of dollars a year and work a dozen or more hours a week to do a volunteer radio show (which I then upload to Live365) and the implication of fraud stings deeply.
I'm thinking I may be getting a little too old for this internet stuff. It's like a glorified Busy Box. It may not be flashy and fun, but at least my dull old reliable Underwood doesn't call me names.

THE CARPAL TUNNEL KID RIDES AGAIN! (March 7, 9-12)
This Saturday, March 7, The Carpal Tunnel Kid will perform a set of his own music during the regular Poetry Group 13 event at Thornberry's Restaurant, 1011 King Street, Utica NY. (Parking is in the large lot adjacent to the Stanley Theatre complex on Genesee St.) The event begins about 9 PM, with various poets, spoken word artists, and musicians from the Utica area. The Carpal Tunnel Kid will be playing the closing set after 11 PM.
The Carpal Tunnel Kid (also variously known as Andy Senior and as the host of RADIOLA!) is coming out of seclusion to accommodate those who need a salubrious dose of trenchant musical satire and lighthearted scurrility--and because someone actually asked him to perform. He fully intends to check his much-vaunted good taste at the door.
General admission to Poetry Group 13 is five dollars. Come early for dinner or a few drinks at Thornberry's, and stay to enjoy the evening's festivities, capped off by the appearance of that rarest of birds, The Carpal Tunnel Kid.

This RADIOLA! is an unflinching musical safari among the male humans that prowl the asphalt plain. (I'll try not to point, since I realize in so doing I'll still have three fingers aimed at myself.) Most of what you'll observe is benign, though it might not do to linger.
On a much happier note, I've included a few selections from the new CD dedicated to the singing of British crooner Val Rosing. This CD was compiled and produced this year by Rosing's son-in-law, Bruce Kaplan, and features a delightful variety of selections by this undeservedly forgotten vocalist. And I found songs that actually fit into this show's theme.

Mr. Mitchell has generously provided me the majority of the recordings featured on tonight's program, most of which are transfers from his rare originals. THE RADIOLA! STORE
Among today's emails I received the following notice:

Three years ago, disc jocky[sic]/producer/historian/educator Phil Schaap opened a gift shop in the Jazz At Lincoln Center complex at 60th & Broadway in Manhattan. He quickly developed it into a unique shop with autographed CDs and books (many of them out of print), rare LPs, beautifully framed 78s signed by JALC director Wynton Marsalis and Lithographs by Christopher Paluso signed by either the artist or musicians associated with the subject. Alas, in the tradition of American business, Schaap's successful and unique shop has been replaced by a Borders kiosk, leaving Phil and his ever mounting collection of of jazz wonders out in the street. But True Blue Music has come to the rescue, offering over 70 of Phil's collectables at present and adding more all the time. STUFFY framed 78 by Coleman Hawkins' Orchestra (Capital 205 February 23, 1945 ORIGINAL ISSUE). In a 17" x 22" flat black frame with a black mat. Signed by Wynton Marsalis. Only one!
Earl Hines - Rosetta (signed by Hines!) - $2,250
ROSETTA framed 78 - Earl Hines & His Orch. (Decca 3517-A from the 78 album Decca 182, September 12, 1934, RARE CANADIAN ISSUE) In a 17" x 22" flat black frame with a black mat. Signed by EARL FATHA HINES. Only one!
I realize I've been missing the boat here, big time. While foolishly producing RADIOLA! at my own expense over the past three years or so, I could have been raking in big bucks by hawking memorabilia to fans of the show.
In the spirit of blatant hucksterism, I offer the following:
Paul Whiteman - Kinky Kids' Parade - $300
This copy of "Kinky Kids' Parade" (recorded August 15, 1925) is the one I've owned since childhood. It's in solid G (well, maybe G-) condition, owing to repeated playing with the same steel needle by two generations of my ancestors. After removing it from the cabinet of my great-grandmother's Victrola XI, I'll sign it and frame it with a Certificate of Authenticity.
Steel Needle - $30
This is the same steel needle which was used to play the above record dozens of times (as far as you know). Sold with Certificate of Authenticity.
Carpal Tunnel Kid - Non-Plugged - $800
"Non-Plugged" is the CD of novelty songs I produced and sold a few years ago on eBay. It is highly useful for chasing stray cats from your yard and it will effectively repel vermin from your crawlspace. Being the last of the original run it is now OUT OF PRINT. Though the cheap CD-R and crude paper label peg it as genuine, it is signed and includes a Certificate of Authenticity.
Record sleeve - $200
This is a genuine 10" record sleeve from the 78 RPM era, crafted with brown paper and printed with the name of a record label (my choice). It will be carefully signed with a vintage fountain pen, and it is sold with a Certificate of Authenticity.
Certificate of Authenticity - $150
This is a blank Certificate of Authenticity, signed by me. Fill it out and frame it with any 78 RPM record to increase its value exponentially. (Trust me on this.) The Certificate of Authenticity comes with its own Certificate of Authenticity.

Some of my loyal listeners are impatiently starting to inquire when RADIOLA! will be on WHCL again. The most definite answer I can give is that the show is Live365 only until late February. That being the case, I'll try to refresh the playlist at least once a week by adding one or two "classics" or other items of interest.

TWO MINDS WITH A SINGLE THOUGHT
The April 11, 1912 issue of Life magazine features the following cartoon panel, "The Master of the House" (featured as part of the center spread, "Frieze for a Bachelor's Apartment" by A.B.Walker):
I immediately found myself wondering if a 17-year-old James Thurber had seen the cartoon, only to have it lodge in his subconscious until the 1930s, when he drew this famous image:
Thurber's "House and Woman" is the better drawing, of course. He takes the idea to a brilliant level of surrealism. But it is the same idea.
Then again, I sometimes find my own spongy gray computer dislodging remembered bits that seem so much like my own inspirations. And I can't draw worth a damn.
ADDENDUM: In the first image, there seems to be another giant woman behind the door. It complicates the panel, and leads to too much speculation about the narrative. As Thurber knew, simple dread is enough.

INCLEMENT WEATHER--NO RADIOLA!
The last RADIOLA! of the 2008 WHCL broadcast season was to have been tomorrow, Friday December 19. Owing to a severe weather forecast, I'm opting not to broadcast. I'm deeply disappointed (especially since the program is all ready to go) but it isn't worth risking the drive from Utica to Clinton in a blizzard.
This will be a wonderful program, complete with an in-studio guest, but it may be some time before we get to air it on WHCL.
I'll be uploading homemade shows (and RADIOLA! "classics") to Live365 over the next two months until I can get back on Hamilton College radio.

AUNTIE BEEB NIXES PRE-1940 DANCE BANDS

I am an Al Bowlly fan who is trying to raise awareness about the recent loss of the *only* half hour on BBC national radio to feature 1930s dance bands - namely the first half of Malcolm Laycock's show on Radio 2. The executive producer, Bob McDowall, has effectively ensured this music will not get played any more.
Alan Dell played dance band music on his BBC Radio show from 1969 to 1995, and until 2008 Malcolm Laycock played it. Now this music, which has lasted this long because it is worth listening to, has been abruptly deleted from the playlist.

I heard about this issue a few days ago, and have posted on the topic on the Dismuke Message Board. Apparently. some beleaguered BBC flak responded to one of the board members with some drivel about how the 1920s and 1930s were somehow over-represented:
Musically, what is a very specific style from a short period (dance bands of the 20's and 30's) was taking up half of the programme. In effect, this meant that the past 70 years of the genre was restricted to the second half.
Of course it's a "specific style"--which is why it should be granted its own block of airtime! My rant on the topic:
I took Malcolm Laycock's link off my RADIOLA! site. I used to stream and listen to his show occasionally, but usually only the first half. Big band stuff from the mid-40s onward gives me a headache.
And it's not that it's drivel. It's real music, with sound musicianship and good musical values. It just lacks the joy and lightness I love in the pre-1940 sound. It's too brassy and too slick--and the harmonies are monotonous. Enduring big band music of the late 1940s and beyond is like being held prisoner in Las Vegas.
There were good, knowledgeable jazz hosts in my area who played Stan Kenton, Basie, Boyd Raeburn, and Sauter-Finnegan endlessly--and ignored the 1930s entirely. I built my love of the music on those stray bits of pure (pre 1940) joy that some disc jockeys would permit. And the reason I do my show is that I wanted a program on the air that someone like me would listen to.
The hot dance and jazz band music of the 1920s and the light, sweet swing of the 1930s have nothing whatsoever to do with the so-called big band sound of later vintage (except using some of the same instruments). The BBC vandals have lumped them together and crushed the joy. For true parity, these styles need to be kept distinct.
This is a worldwide issue--not just limited to the UK--thanks to internet streaming. It is worth raising a fuss and demanding that BBC Radio 2 dedicate at least a half hour a week to 1920s and 1930s music. The love for this specific style of music is why programs like RADIOLA!, The Big Broadcast, Forward Into the Past, Al Barnes' Vintage Jazz, The Original Bandbox, Radio Dismuke, etc., exist and continue to find a loyal listenership.

WHAT I DID BEFORE RADIOLA!
A facet of my former life has come back to haunt me on YouTube--it was only a matter of time. Back about 1996 I was caught by the candid video camera at my boyhood home in North Utica singing and playing a few of my compositions. I had totally forgotten about this tape, but my friend Molly (who took the video) just posted these deathless performances on the internet. And the odd thing is, these are really good performances of my stuff. (Thanks, Molly!!)
