There will be no broadcast of RADIOLA! tonight on WHCL-FM. Hamilton College is on break and the station will be shut down for the duration. This coincides with a bit of minor upheaval here, so I won't be updating the Live 365 site with additional material for at least the next day or so. I regret any inconvenience this may cause.

This week's INTERNET ONLY RADIOLA! is offered as a tribute to Rich Conaty's The Big Broadcast, the vintage music behemoth on WFUV. Over the next two weeks Rich has taken on the Herculean task of playing 100 "moon" songs. I thought I would take a complementary tack and devote this playlist to songs of the sun, the morning, and associated (for me) distasteful imagery. ("Oh, How I Hate to Get Up in the Morning," the song that best expresses my own feelings on the topic, is omitted. I've tried--oh, how I've tried--to keep a positive view of my subject!)

This broadcast is dedicated to and features great jazz and hot dance recordings by those who passed through obscurity on their way to oblivion. The name of the bandleader might be known, or perhaps that of the vocalist, but the majority of these musicians remain anonymous. Alternating with the sets of unattributed pieces are songs by known performers about Nobody, Somebody, or Whomever. The star of this presentation (you might say its Lodestar) is the Ocarina soloist we all know and love.

I've always been one to push more envelopes than the Postal Service. This Live 365 only RADIOLA! is yet another chance I'm taking--that a Latin/Caribbean themed program will appeal to those who listen mainly for classic 20s and 30s jazz and pop. I've always loved the calypso of the 1930s, and Lou Danziger, who listens from California, suggested I delve into some of the delightful early Cuban material that has been reissued. I have included generous portions of both, along with US music that has been inspired and influenced by points South of the border. Enjoy!

New CD by the WEJB--"The Gold Diggers of Broadway!"

Imagine my delight when "The Gold Diggers of Broadway," the newest CD by the amazing West End Jazz Band dropped through my mail-slot last month! The WEJB plays the Good Stuff--1920s and 1930s-style Sweet and Hot Dance, and plenty of it. This new disc offers a huge variety of selections, including the special sort of "concert pieces" played by Pops Whiteman, melodies from Hal Roach pictures, blazing hot Jazz numbers like "Camel Walk," vocals by Leah LaBrea, and the Bix/Bill Challis tribute "Dardanella."

This CD is now on the WEJB website. "The Gold Diggers of Broadway" is available at World's Records. For those who love the music, it is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Four Hour Season Finale on Dec. 16, 2005

Hamilton College will be going on break after next week--and with it, WHCL. To take the edge off the impending hiatus, there will be a four-hour RADIOLA! extravaganza next Friday, starting at 6 PM EST. My apologies to those who attempted to listen last Friday. There was not only no RADIOLA!--there was no hockey either. I hope that the planned double-dose makes up for the dead air experienced by some on Dec. 9.

The special RADIOLA! planned for this week did not come to pass. At 7 PM the building housing WHCL was locked and no one was answering the bell. Rather than hang around Clinton (which seemed to be having some sort of Black Friday Festival) Sue and I came home. Giddy holiday commerce depresses us so.

Even though there is no new show this week (though there will be next Friday, Deo Volente), I will endeavor to add new content to the Live 365 site. Just because I'm thwarted is no reason you should be.

This was a four-hour broadcast that almost wasn't. Owing to car troubles--my wife's Toyota wouldn't start and so I had to borrow lawn mower gas to propel my Ford Fiasco (aka The Clown Car)--I got to the station several minutes late. Add to that elevated blood sugar and general tiredness, and it might have been much, much worse. Actually, it turned out pretty good. The Return of Radiola!

Dear Friends,

Nailed down to the floor, set in stone, immutable and inevitable, now it can be told: RADIOLA! returns to WHCL-FM 88.7 this Friday at 8 PM ET with a celebration of New Orleans Jazz.

I started Radiola! this summer with the intention of presenting a tangy miscellany of 20s and 30s jazz and popular music, with some ventures into early Calypso, the British Music Hall, and a few recordings that don't easily fit into any category. My objective is to keep the proceedings light and fun--the music shimmers with levity and wit and beats with the pulse of life. Radiola is a spirit medium for the raucous ghosts of voices from more than 70 years ago, communicating back to us the joy of being alive.

No city lived more fully than New Orleans. Throughout its history there was a sense of the sweetness and precariousness of life. The music reflected this deep joy, made all the deeper through its awareness that nothing is permanent. This is the spirit I hope to convey on this Friday's program, with recordings by Oscar Papa Celestin, The Halfway House Orchestra, The New Orleans Owls, Sam Morgan's Jazz Band, Louis Dumaine's Jazzola Eight, Joseph Robichaux's New Orleans Rhythm Boys, and many others.

Diamond Disc Extravaganza (August 26, 2005)

I've just uploaded a Live 365-only edition of Radiola, featuring a selection of Edison Diamond Disc recordings from my childhood stash. I recorded them on cassette tape in the late 1980s, and they are presented with no audio adjustments other than Dolby B noise reduction. It's a short program (65 minutes) but it's all-new, previously unheard material. (Except of course for the Anonymous Ocarina Man, but he's earned a place in our hearts.) Hiatus! (The Musical)

There will be no broadcast of Radiola on WHCL-FM this week (August 5). WHCL is on summer hiatus until further notice. HOWEVER, archived shows are still available on Live 365 --and the site WILL BE UPDATED with new material each week. (I recorded both Monday programs I did while subbing for the World Music host, and will be adding them to the rotation. These "Radiola Extras" have a distinctly international flair.) If the hiatus lasts longer than two weeks, I will create programs on my computer to add to my Live 365 station at weekly intervals. No worries!

My deepest thanks to Jonathan Mead, Danny Klag, Alan Clark, and everyone else at WHCL for letting me get started on this broadcasting adventure. The initial eight weeks just FLEW by.
