Announcing The Syncopated Times Radio Network

RADIOLA! is now a featured program on The Syncopated Times Radio Network.

The Syncopated Times Radio Network is a new internet radio station founded by the editors of The Syncopated Times, and 35-year broadcast veteran Jeff Bressler.

The Syncopated Times Radio Network explores the world of hot jazz, big bands, ragtime, and swing through daily broadcasts of music, interviews with the journalists from The Syncopated Times, and a roster of over 25 radio programs and podcasts featuring amazing and knowledgeable hosts. 

The Network will also provide programs of live jam sessions, concerts, and new releases from bands and record producers. Our first live concert broadcast is scheduled for April. As well as the expected classics, our library includes the music of some of today’s most highly respected artists and bands.

A Special Rebroadcast for New Year's 2021

 I have been hectically busy editing and laying out The Syncopated Times this month and dealing with all the business appertaining thereto, so I'm remiss in not creating a new program for this New Year's Eve. It's a commonplace to say that this year, 2020, is one that we should be particularly happy to be rid of. In order to fill the void of silence, I'm refreshing an old show I did in December 2008, "London Calling," that features three hours of delightful British dance band music from the 1920s and 1930s. Here is the playlist. I produced the program in observance of the sad fact that BBC Radio 2 had stopped including this enchanting music in their lineup. These tunes will provide a suitable accompaniment to the celebration of chasing that mean old man, 2020, out the door.

New Year's Record Party 2019: Taking a Mulligan on 2013

I apologize for not posting any new shows for a while. I guarantee you that I've had lovely records stacking up (vertically) over the past few years--and I've even had time to play a few of them. With the best of intentions, I've promised myself (and others) that I would dig in and restore a slew of them for everyone's enjoyment via my RADIOLA! program. What has intervened in that plan is The Syncopated Times, which has monopolized my time and energy for the past three years. It turns out to be my life's work. But RADIOLA! is fun, and I miss doing it terribly.

For New Year's this year, I offer the show produced for the start of 2013. That was such an awful year in almost every way that I thought it deserved a do-over. The fun began on New Year's Eve, when I got a severe chest cold that lasted two months. Coming out of the Valley of the Lung Bunnies, the year only got worse. I won't elaborate. But I wanted to hear and enjoy this program again with the knowledge that we saw the light at the end of the tunnel, got run over by the express train, got up, dusted ourselves off, and came out of the experience not much worse for the wear.

"New Year's Eve Dance Party 2009 Redux" December 31, 2017

Incredibly busy as I've been since launching publication of The Syncopated Times in February 2016, I've still promised myself (and others) that I would brush the newspaper business aside so that I can share some of my more recently-acquired records on New Year's Eve. I had every intention of doing that this year, but (through circumstances entirely beyond my control) I find myself able to offer you only a back number (though a particularly good one).

I was feeling much more optimistic at the end of 2009 than I am at the close of 2017. 2010 did turn out to be one of the best years of my life in so many ways. I was (briefly) wealthy, I (temporarily) lost more than 70 lbs., and, through the purchase of an excellent record collection, I managed to produce wonderful RADIOLA! programs (featuring all my own transfers) without a break for the next two years. (Not that my intentions or my promises count for much, but I do have lots of great records I'd love to restore and share in 2018.)

From my original post eight years ago: "I'm presenting this year's New Year's Eve special early so people worldwide can listen and enjoy in their own time zones. This four-hour program is a very danceable mix of records I've acquired recently, with plenty of British bands and vocalists. Almost none of this material has been heard on RADIOLA! before."

Introducing The Syncopated Times!

Over the past two weeks I have prepared the first ever issue of The Syncopated Times. This was no doubt the hardest work I've ever done in my life. Added to that, it was necessary for me to teach myself newspaper layout from the ground up as I was assembling my first issue. Luckily, I'm fairly resourceful, and a quick study—but I've also had to struggle against my own profound inertia to scale a learning curve that has been more of a right angle. But the first issue is done! In finishing it I've managed to amaze myself.

Last year I began writing for The American Rag, a monthly national paper devoted to the preservation and perpetuation of traditional jazz and ragtime. Though a series of wholly unanticipated circumstances, I purchased the assets of the paper from Don Jones, who published The American Rag over the past twenty years. I am deeply grateful to Don and Cathie Jones for this opportunity, and I am determined to keep their work going in The Syncopated Times far into the future.

Thanks also for the indispensable help of Lew Shaw, Russ Tarby, Gary Price, and Norman Vickers whose work you will find in our first issue.

Since I'm expanding the frequency of issue to twelve per year, at the start of February I'm raising the yearly subscription price to $30 per year in the US (and $55 for two years). I'll maintain the Canadian and Overseas rates at present (as posted on The American Rag website ) but I anticipate expanding to include a digital edition that will make it much more economical for subscribers outside the US to receive content. (And being digital, it will be instantaneous.)
