AL GALLODORO (1913-2008)

Al Gallodoro passed away last weekend at the age of 95. His prophecy that "I was born with the horns and I will die with the horns" was borne out by the fact that he played brilliantly at the Corning Jazz and Harvest Festival two weeks before he died. When we saw him at the Empire House Restaurant in Gilbertsville this July, he played as beautifully as ever--but he sensed that we would not meet again.

My wife and I knew his health was failing, and on last Friday's show I played his 1969 recording of "Indian Summer." His years spent in Oneonta were an Indian Summer, but they ended all too soon for those who loved him.

I will play a program of Al's music in tribute this Friday, October 10, at 8 PM Eastern on WHCL.

Accompanist/manager JoAnn Chmielowski, pictured with Al in the above photo (taken March 22), wrote a moving tribute you may read on Al's home page.

WEJB's "Sunny Side Up" is HOT!

Monday I received the newest CD from the West End Jazz Band, "Sunny Side Up," and they just keep getting better. Thanks to the brilliance of Mike Bezin's superb arrangements, and the disciplined hot, hard swinging of the band, this CD is tops. Mike has arranged eight Fletcher Henderson classics for the six-piece WEJB, and brings them to vivid life. Those gem-like charts would be worth the price of admission alone, but there is so much more to enjoy here--excellent dance medleys, novelties, star turns for every member of the band, "La Rosita," nods to King Oliver and The Coon-Sanders Nighthawks, and an original interpretation of "I'm Going to Float My Boat Right Back to Terre Haute."

This is the WEJB's first CD for Bryan Wright's excellent Rivermont label, and is beautifully packaged and produced, with delightful graphics by Dennis Scott (who is also the organist on their great "Movie Palace Style" CD).

The musicianship here should be noted as well. Mike's own cornet, with its echoes of Bix and Joe Smith, provides just the right sound for the Henderson pieces and the hot dance selections. Reedman John Otto has just the right alto tone for 1920s music. Add to that the metronomic Leah Bezin on banjo, and the equally stellar Frank Gualtieri on trombone, Mike Albiniak on drums, and Mike Wallbridge on tuba, and you have one of the finest bands working today.

My wife Sue, who is not easily impressed, loved this CD and said that the WEJB sounds so authentic and true to the period that "all they need are the scratches." I concur. All their CDs are worth having, but you've got to buy "Sunny Side Up."

NOW MORE SHOWS ON LIVE365 THAN EVER!

CORRECTION: My Live365 station has been upgraded to 300 megabytes, which means almost 30 hours of programming on the stream.

Yesterday I uploaded a few more shows owing to what seemed a 500 mb capacity. This corrected itself to the actual 300 mb storage limit. Nonetheless, I've left up a couple of YOWZAH! shows (broadcast in July and August 2007 over Utica College station WPNR). Included in this batch is my "Voyage of Life" show--a musical interpretation of Thomas Cole's four-painting allegory of human existence.

This still means that there is more programming on RADIOLA! on Live365 than ever before. The simultaneous free listener limit has been lowered to ten by Live365, so in order to insure access to the stream you may have to invest in a Live365 VIP membership. Doing so through this link will also help offset my costs in broadcasting on Live365, which have increased substantially since last year.

CATHERINE RUSSELL AT THE STANLEY MONDAY, JULY 7 AT 8 PM!!

Catherine (or "Cat") Russell is going to appear in Utica at the recently renovated Stanley Theatre for Utica Monday Night at 8 PM on July 7. This is a must-see performance. Cat is the daughter of the legendary Luis Russell, who worked with King Oliver, Red Allen, and Louis Armstrong, to name but a few. Cat's new album "Sentimental Streak" features her delightful interpretations of many jazz standards, with appropriate accompaniment. AL GALLODORO'S 95th BIRTHDAY!

UPDATE: Al played brilliantly to a packed house at his birthday celebration. On the way home, we listened to his new CD (of a 1969 performance) and he sounds as good as he did 40 years ago.






On Saturday, June 21, the Sego Cafe (291 Main St., Oneonta, NY) will reopen for one night only: Al Gallodoro will be entertaining guests at from 8pm to 11pm on the occasion of this 95th birthday. Doors open at 7pm. There will be a $9.50 cover charge which includes your first drink. Joining Al will be long-time piano accompanist, JoAnn Bertone Chmielowski, Larry Trott on Bass, and Lou Colone on drums, and other fine guest musicians. Doors will open at 7PM. Appetizers will be available (and of course birthday cake will be served). No reservations accepted, first come, first served.

This special evening will also celebrate the release of a new CD, A MOMENT IN TIME, which captures a live performance Al made in Birmingham Alabama in 1969.

Al Gallodoro holds the distinction of of playing more on-the-air live clarinet and saxophone solos than other player in history. Beginning his career at the age of 13, he has played for Vaudeville to Symphonies, Carnegie Hall to small cafes, from Europe's North Sea to New Orleans Jazz Festivals, and even continues the live radio performances he was known for during his long career to this day. And even more amazingly, at 95 he is one of the longest continually performing musicians in the world. As a member of the Paul Whiteman Orchestra, radio staff orchestras, and playing under the batons of Arturo Toscanini and Leopold Stokowski, and more currently, conductor Steven S. Richman, in addition to freelance work, Gallodoro's fine playing, the majority of it taken from live performances, has been included on countless recordings.

Gallodoro's latest CD, A Moment In Time captures a live performance made in 1969, at the Roma Country Club in Birmingham Alabama. A southern flair, credited to Al Gallodoro's Birmingham and New Orleans roots and the Mediterranean influence of his Sicilian heritages gives this live concert a unique spark. At the pinnacle of clarinet and saxophone technique, Gallodoro achieves a seemingly impossible flow of double and triple tonguing, with phrasing that is embellished in a highly ornate, yet understandable style. This melodically dazzling evening on saxophone and clarinet will enchant the listener with its Minute Waltz, jazz standards, as well as ethnic pieces such as the Beer Barrel Polka and When Irish Eyes are Smiling. What particularly stands out is Al's "My Father's Italian Polka", which he never knew the name for, so he has titled it as such, in memory of Antonio Gallodoro. without written music, the melody was passed to Al, then a young child in Birmingham, by his father, himself a clarinet player. The CD will transport the listener right into a steamy southern country club evening.

The CD will be available at the concert and at Al's web-site www.algallodoro.com. A Moment in Time was produced by Oneonta based Chmusic Productions, a small local independent production company co-owned by JoAnn Chmielowski and Al Gallodoro, recordings courtesy of Golden Rooster Records. Chmusic Productions has the distinction of producing many of Al Gallodoro's finest older recordings with the expertise of Dryhill Studio's engineer Andris Balins, who specializes in preservation and remastering. Dryhill Studios is also located in Oneonta, New York.
